1. Hell or High Water
A modern western about two brothers who resort to robbing banks to save the family farm in West Texas and the Texas Rangers on their trail. The acting is superb, even the minor characters are outstanding. The writing makes you care about everyone.
2. La La Land
Mia is a struggling would be actress. Sebastian is a struggling jazz musician. As their romance grows their careers take different paths and compromises are made. A wonderful musical with great music, a perfect cast and a well directed brilliant script.
The story of the 'merc with a mouth'. This is the first R-Rated Marvel film and it earns that rating. It is true to the comic, very funny from the opening credits to the very end and part of the 'X-Men' universe. Everything about "Deadpool" is perfect.
Set in a world where animals act as humans and predators and prey have learned to live together. One of those rare animated films that has something for adults and children. It is funny, has a great message and a nice touch of suspense.
5. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Before 'A New Hope' a band of rebels steals the plans for the Death Star in this prequel that sets up the entire series. The cast is great, there is more action than any other 'Star Wars' film and it blends perfectly into the next film but it is unique. This maybe the best film in the entire series.
6. Captain America: Civil War
A pivotal film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe it is one of the best super heroes movies. While there is plenty of action, with some surprises including a much anticipated debut, it is the dramatic scenes that are the most powerful and make this a unique super-hero film that actually has a plot that does not include a super villain.
A timeless story of human self-discovery and connection, chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.
8. The Edge of Seventeen
Nadine has always been an outsider with only one friend when that friend falls for her annoyingly perfect brother her life falls apart. This teen angst film is one of the funniest films of the year. The cast is perfect, the writing is witty and spot on hilarious.
9. 10 Cloverfield Lane
After a car accident Michelle wakes up in a locked bare room chained to the wall. At times an intense edge-of-your-seat thriller while at others it's a mystery all with a sci-fi twist. The script is perfect and the cast is ideal.
10. 20th Century Women
The story of three women who explore love and freedom in Southern California during the late 1970s. The cast is terrific, the story is compelling and the direction is personal.
