Paul is a successful actor who is preparing to star in Chekov’s “Uncle Vanya” but is paralyzed by anxiety. He reads in The New Yorker about a high-tech company that claims to be able to help people like him by extracting and freezing their soul. Convinced it is what he needs, he hires them, intending to have his soul reinserted after the play, only to find that the size and shape of his soul is a little disappointing. When he decides he needs his soul back sooner than expected he finds that it is missing from the facility. It seems that a ‘mule’ has taken it to Russia where a soap opera actress is using it to become a better actress. Paul travels to Russia where he meets the ‘mule,’ an attractive woman, who agrees to help him get it back. Unfortunately, the actress has no desire to relinquish her new found acting prowess. And then there is the typical mobster who runs the soul trafficking service. The plot is interesting but it’s not fleshed out enough to make you care about any of the characters. The most interesting person in the film is the Nina, who spends her time as a ‘mule’ trafficking souls from the United States to Russia and back while courting brain damage, unfortunately we don’t get to spend enough time with her story. “Cold Souls” fails to successfully mine the same territory as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” it left me cold, bored and disappointed.
