28 years ago an alien spacecraft coasted to a stop over Johannesburg, South Africa. After waiting for a response to repeated attempts to communicate authorities broke into the ship and found thousands of sick and starving refugees. A multi-national authority (MNU) housed them in a refugee camp named ‘District 9’ where they seem to thrive and their population grows. The camp soon becomes a slum complete with Nigerian criminals. The MNU wants their technology including weapons that can only be operated by the aliens but have not made any headway in adapting them for human use. The alien presence has become an issue and it is has been decided to relocate them to a new and bigger facility. The MNU must follow the law so they have to legally evict the aliens meaning they have to have agents go door-to-door and get signatures on the proper form. It is told in a semi-documentary style from the point of view of the man who is in charge of relocation, Wikus. He is an ineffective manager who is promoted by his father-in-law. As part of the relocation the authorities are looking for weapons and contraband, while searching a shanty Wikus finds something that he thinks is unimportant but it changes his life forever. There is a lot going on in this film with allegories to obvious to miss but it’s the unique plot that kept me intrigued. What happens to Wikus uncovers secrets on both sides and leads to a harrowing conclusion. A sci-fi film that has elements of many others but is not rip-off of any of them, it is unique and entertaining with very good special effects.
