Will is excited to move to a new High School only to realize that he is still the same quiet geeky kid who loves music with a family secret. Very soon there are differences, he becomes friends with an attractive loner and when a former cheerleader notices him do something nice she decides he can help her take care of some preschoolers. He agrees to help, ends up impressing her with his music knowledge and she asks for help with her band. It turns out the biggest thing in this new school is a regional music competition called ‘Bandslam’ where the winner gets a recording contract. Before he realizes what is happening he is managing her band, getting it ready to challenge the school champion. When his activities with the band interfere with his relationships with his new girlfriend and his single mom he has to figure out how to make it all work. Just when it looks like everything is about to come together tragedy strikes. This is not your typical ‘let’s start a band’ teen movie it has depth, emotion and heart. I was surprised at how good this film was, the writing is nuanced and true to life. Alyson Michalka is a revelation and the rest of the cast is wonderful. And the music is outstanding. Take the entire family to see this one but have tissues handy.
