George Simmons is a comedian and movie star who just got some really bad news. He has terminal cancer and his doctor wants him to try an experimental treatment that has a small chance of working. Ira is a struggling stand-up comedian sleeping on the couch of his TV star friend while working at a deli and hoping for a break. George shows up at a local comedy club bumping and then befriending Ira. He hires him to be his assistant and to write jokes for him. Over time they become friends and Ira helps George reconnect with his family and friends while dealing with his illness. When George reconnects with his lost love, Ira is concerned that he may break up her marriage. In most movies you know what is going to happen but here there could be some surprises, or not. Unlike most films about show business this trip into the world of comedy and celebrity is accessible and believable. The writing is stellar and the acting is perfect. George is obviously based on the real Adam Sandler but that makes it even funnier. Even though it is almost two and a half hours long it doesn’t drag, I never looked at my watch. I am not a fan of the typical stupid Adam Sandler comedies but he has made some very good dramas (Reign Over Me, Spanglish) but this dramedy just might be his best. It doesn’t hurt that he was working with Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin), also making his best film. There are some very funny scenes but it’s the genuine characters and situations that make this a wonderful film experience. The only drawback is that it may be too real, the language and some of the humor more than earn the R rating.
