Abby is a busy morning TV show producer who is terrific at her job but not so good at relationships. After another disastrous date she is back at home where she accidentally watches a cable access show called ‘The Ugly Truth’ with an obnoxious host who gives male chauvinist a new definition. She gets so incensed that she calls in only to be insulted further. The next morning at work he boss laments their low ratings but says he has something that will bring them up. Yep, you guessed it he brings in Mike, the guy from ‘The Ugly Truth,’ and gives him a segment. Abby initially hates him and what he does to the show, but it does increase ratings. Meanwhile, she runs into a guy she likes and Mike offers her dating advice. He tells her that if his advice works she will work with him on the show but if it doesn’t he will resign. She agrees and of course his coarse suggestions at first annoy her but they appear to work – of course they do its crude elementary stuff. Will Abby find love with the new guy or will she and Mike get together? If you have never seen a Hollywood romantic comedy you might not be able to answer the question. In a good film getting to the inevitable ending is fun and romantic, not here. It is sad to these characters presented as normal when they are so contrived it is almost annoying. You know everything that is going happen before it does and then it disappoints. There are a few laughs and the stars do have screen chemistry but the message is terrible. Please note that the R rating is well deserved.
