It starts with a narrator saying this is the story of boy meets girl but it is so much more than that. Tom is in love with Summer but more than that he is love with the idea Summer. She is a beautiful, witty and intelligent woman and he is handsome and successful but they do have a problem. Tom believes in a cosmic once-in-a-lifetime kind of love but Summer doesn’t believe true love exists. The story is told in a unique way, in flashbacks introduced by a graphic telling you what day it happened. From day one when Tom first sees Summer in the office it bounces around going back and forth in time to give you a good look at their relationship. It may sound confusing but it is not, it works brilliantly. The actors are perfect and the writing is real and honest. The only false note is Tom’s sister who is a typical older than her years pre-teen who gives him advice but even that has its moments. This is no typical Hollywood romcom, it is an insightful look at love and relationships. “(500) Days of Summer” refers to the five hundred days of their relationship and I wish that we could have seen all of them. This is the kind of film that the major studios should but putting out, then it would get the distribution and marketing it deserves instead you will have to search for it. When you find it you will be rewarded with a wonderful movie going experience.
