My Rating System
While I use a standard 1 to 5 star system I define each rating a little differently than most critics. I never use half stars. I think its a cop out you might as well use a 1 to 10 rating system or why not 1/4 stars what's next 7/8 of a star? Give me a break take a stand and go with whole stars. I hope this will help you understand my thinking.
A brief explanation of my rating system.
A perfect film A must see for everyone. I always explain this rating by saying that if a film with this rating is only playing in Albuquerque it is worth making the trip to see it. I rarely give this rating.
A very good film one that is a contender for my Top Ten list at the end of the year. Everything about a film with this rating is very good. A film you should definately see but it may not be for everyone. Stand in line pay full price.
A good film, one that I enjoyed but it is flawed in some way. Most people will enjoy it unless I note in the review that it is for a specific audience. Worth paying full price to see if you are big fan of one of the stars or the genre but if you are in the mall with nothing to do catch it at a matinee.
A below average film but one with something that works. It may have a limited audience. Wait of the DVD.
A terrible movie. One that not only should no one see it should never have been made. All the copies should be collected and burned, the director should have to go back to film school and the writer(s) should have their word processors taken away.
Not Screened
The studio decided not to screen this film for critics. This usually means they think we will hate it and they don't want the negative reviews on opening day fearing it will hurt the box office. There are certain genres and films that are critic proof and they to are often not screened in advance for film critics - most horror films fall into this category. When this happens my theory is: if they didn't want me to see it I won't, its not like there are limited number of films out there. Look for my review when it comes out on DVD.
