The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will celebrate the 50th anniversary of “Imitation of Life” with the screening of a recently struck print of the film on Friday, August 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Hosted by film critic Stephen Farber, the evening will feature an onstage discussion with Oscar®-nominated actresses Susan Kohner and Juanita Moore, conducted by Kohner’s sons, filmmakers Paul and Chris Weitz. The print, which is part of the Academy Film Archive collection, was made from the Universal Pictures restoration.
Douglas Sirk’s classic 1959 melodrama “Imitation of Life” portrays the uneasy alliance of two single mothers – an ambitious actress, who is white (Lana Turner), and her housekeeper, who is black (Moore) – and the tumultuous relationships they endure with their respective daughters, played by Sandra Dee and Kohner. Both Moore and Kohner received Academy Award® nominations for Actress in a Supporting Role.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced July 30th, 2009 that Edward Zwick has prevailed in the run-off for the open Directors Branch seat on the 2009-2010 Board of Governors; this will be his first term on the Board. Zwick will join Martha Coolidge and Curtis Hanson as the third governor representing the branch.
Earlier this month run-off ballots were mailed to Directors Branch members when Zwick and Gil Cates tied for the seat. Ballots were due back yesterday (July 29). This was the first time in Academy history that there was a tie in the balloting.

Imitation of Life, one of the most beloved and respected stories of all time, is available in a two-movie special edition!
