Sara and Brian’s youngest daughter, Anna, was genetically engineered to save her older sister, Kate, who has leukemia. Anna has been through procedures her entire life that have helped keep her sister alive but when she is told she will have to donate a kidney she finally says “no”. She hires an attorney who files for her medical emancipation. Naturally, her mother goes nuts but everyone else, including Kate, is very understanding. The judge who hears the case recently lost her own daughter in car accident giving both attorneys pause. While the case goes on Kate gets sicker and will die without the kidney. There is a surprise near the end that is fairly easy to guess if you try. If you read the book know that it does not end the same way and the brother is not as big a part of this story. The best parts are when we glimpse how having a sick child effects the other members of the family. We see the situation from everyone’s point of view, both parents, both sisters and the older brother as they narrate segments of the movie. That is not the most annoying part of what could have been a very compelling story because it looks at times like the filmmakers had to stretch a thin script by adding at least montage sequences that feel like music videos tossed in as fillers. What should have been a compelling, tear inducing, life-affirming film is instead a befuddling mish-mash with some great acting.
