George Kirk takes command of his starship just before it is destroyed by a superior enemy vessel and managers to save over 300 crew members including his new born son, James. Twenty five years later the same vessel attacks the planet Vulcan and a fleet of starships manned by cadets speed to the rescue. Aboard the Enterprise Jim Kirk realizes it’s the same ship that killed his father and thinks it’s a trap. But he’s a cadet who’s not even supposed to be aboard and can’t do anything but that doesn’t stop him from trying. On board with him are Spock, Bones, Uhura, Sulu and the rest of the gang. Will they be able to pull together and save the Universe? You know they will but it all in how they do it and it is spectacular. The acting is very good with Karl Urban outstanding as ‘Bones’, the story is derivative and borrows from many episodes of the series and other Sci-Fi films but it works. Considering all the characters that are introduced (or should I say re-introduced) and the long back stories of Kirk and Spock it is surprisingly good. The best thing is the alternate timeline that gives producer/director J. J. Abrams the ability to do whatever he wants without running afoul of the Trek mythos.
