My Top Ten Films of 2008
December 31, 2008
When I sat down to write my top ten list I was suprised to find that I had not given 5 stars to any film this year. I saw the best film of the year on April 15th. At the time I knew it was a great film but I expected to see better as the year progress. Boy, was I disappointed. I had no idea how how high the bar had been set by "The Visitor". It is wonderful little film about relationships with Richard Jennkins giving the best performance of the year. It knocked the British gangster/comedy "In Bruges" out the top spot but they stayed one and two the rest of the year. Will Smith landed two completely differnt films in my Top Five "Hancock" and "Seven Pounds". Smith has always been a box office star but this year he proved that is one of the best actors working and he knows how to pick his material. Sitting between the two Smith films is the brilliant historical drama "Frost/Nixon". The rest of the Top Ten includes two stories based on real people, an inside look at an aging has-been athlete trying to hang on, one of the best comic book movies and a thoroughly entertaining romantic drama set against a popular game show.

The key to a good film is the writing but a great film has to have great directing and acting, as well. All of these films are worth seeing and owning on DVD or Blu-ray.
